As a Perth teen, Rove McManus dreamed of becoming a wildly successful TV talk-show host. Now, after years of charming Aussie viewers, he has set his sights on the home of the brave. Janet Hawley meets him in Los Angeles.

When Rove McManus awakes in his new secluded home, at the base of a peaceful canyon in Beverly Hills, just beyond the craziness of Hollywood, he knows he is among showbiz royalty. Higher up, along the manicured winding streets lined with tall security fences and taller hedges, sits David and Victoria Beckham's fairy-tale white palace. More importantly to McManus, the home of Jay Leno is only a few streets away...

Rove to go live with show from City of Angels
Added: Saturday 23 July

TRIPLE Gold Logie winner Rove McManus will make his much-anticipated return to the small screen on September 19 with his new variety show Rove LA.

The whip-smart host, who stole the show at the ASTRA Awards when presenting the gong for Channel of the Year, will head back to his adopted home of Los Angeles on Tuesday, with his wife Tasma Walton, and open the production office for his new show on August 1.

"We get back Tuesday and I head off on Thursday to do a piece on the world lumberjack championship for the Tonight Show (hosted by Jay Leno) and then we are in the office on Monday," McManus said. "It is going to be great. I have had enough rest."

McManus said his new show for Fox8 would be mainly based around celebrity interviews, although he would also be filing reports from famous and infamous and just plain odd LA locations.

"The fact we are in LA will hopefully work in our favour. We will only be asking them (guests) to drive 15 minutes instead of fly 15 hours, so that will be good," he said. "We have got people locked in already, which is a nice start." McManus said he was ready for the new challenge. "I have really just been recharging my batteries (since leaving Channel 10).

"There is some pressure, but if it is coming from anywhere it is put on me by myself and I think that is a good thing."

LOS Angeles-based Rove McManus will head home in July to present a gong at the ASTRA Awards for 2011.

The pay awards could benefit from some star-power following budgetary cuts that have seen the ceremony reeled in over the past two years.

The ASTRAs were hosted by Brian McFadden and Charlotte Dawson in a 2009 wine and beer-fuelled event, but such were the headlines that Foxtel bosses Brian Walsh and Kim Williams were left unimpressed.

So they moved it to the State Theatre last year with cocktails before, not during the show, and then again after at the event party at Ivy. The venue on July 21 is the Sydney Theatre Company in Walsh Bay where McManus will present one of 14 awards.

Who magazine have updated their online content with the article of Rove and Tasma's recent visit to the Amazon.

United in their passion for animals and conservation, Rove McManus and his wife, Tasma Walton, took off on an exciting journey into deepest Brazil.

Submerged in the Cristalino River in the middle of the southern Amazon, Rove McManus was oblivious to the anacondas and crocodiles that make their home in the pristine waters.

"It was this beautiful day, and I was just floating in the river looking up at the sun," McManus tells WHO of his June adventure with his wife of one year, actress Tasma Walton. "There was this condor circling above me, and I just took that in and thought, 'Wow, this is a pretty special place that I am in.'"

For the former host of Network Ten's Rove, the experience was the fulfilment of his passion — born in his West Australian childhood — for being amongst animals in their natural environment. Rove says that when people asked Sir David Attenborough when he began to love animals, his response was, "When did you stop?" says McManus, 36. "It's a bit like that for me, it's always been there.

From Encore magazine - 'Outback-set animated film to start production'

Mad Cow Pictures will begin production of the independent animated CGI film Trouble Down Under in Sydney next month, directed by the company's founder Steve Trenbirth.

For this project, Trenbirth (who directed Disney's home entertainment releases The Lion King II and Jungle Book II) has partnered with producer Tony Findlay and California-based Fastlane Entertainment. The script was written by Findlay and Howard Jackson, based on a story by Findlay.

In Trouble Down Under, a mob of African meerkats lost in the outback causes tension with the local red and gray Kangaroo mob families. Their accidental arrival triggers chaos when a white wallaby rogue named Al Bino, returning from exile overseas, creates further confusion.

The voice cast includes Rove McManus, Ernie Dingo, Cameron Daddo, Andrew Daddo and Skyppy star Tony Bonner. Two roles will go to the winners of an international contest, which will give an Australian and an American the chance to participate in the project. The film will be released in October 2012.

Rove McManus is an Australian that New Zealanders don't mind liking. A rare thing, really. For some Kiwis like John Campbell, it goes beyond liking. David Farrier asked Rove how it's going.

"It's going very well. It's one of those things: True love. No boundaries. The fact we haven't seen each other in a long time only makes the heart grow fonder." Rove McManus gets excited, talking about his friendship with John Campbell. And he's genuine, too. You can hear it flowing down the phone line.

• From News Limited - 'Free McManus goes a-roving for US TV opportunities'

ROVE McManus has to date avoided Australian media and instead will promote himself to more than 160 countries when he appears on a US cable show next week, perhaps a nod to his plans to take his career to the US.

Following his decision to quit his decade-old TV series on Sunday, McManus has dodged interview requests at home, even cancelling an appearance in the studio audience for a Michael Parkinson UKTV special filmed in Sydney on Tuesday night. There is speculation McManus may pursue a career in US television after making three appearances with NBC's Jay Leno in the past two years. That has now intensified with the revelation he will be the first Australian interviewed on the top rating cable talk show Chelsea Lately, fronted by the wickedly witty and ribald-edged comedian Chelsea Handler.

WITH the media industry buzzing about what Rove McManus will do next, his ties to US television have continued to firm.

WITH the media industry buzzing about what Rove McManus will do next, his ties to US television have continued to firm. Talkshow heavyweight Jay Leno has paid tribute to the comic he helped champion internationally on his program, with his staff adding their congratulations online.

A posting on Leno's official website, written by the show's talent coordinator Bryan Branly, acknowledged Rove as "Australia's version of Jay Leno and a good friend to our show. Rove made a few appearances on our old show with Jay and we always appreciated his fresh Aussie perspective. Rove also brought us our correspondents Hamish and Andy'' (who appeared on the program during their recent US tour with the Caravan of Courage).

While both shows have endured soft ratings, Branly wrote: "On behalf of The Jay Leno Show staff, I want to congratulate Rove and his staff on 10 strong years of Rove programming. We all look forward to what Rove will do next!'' The continuing connection has wedged McManus' foot in the American TV industry door, with sources telling Media Bites breaking the market remains at the top of his "to do'' list.

Rove calls it a night after 10 years

Entertainer Rove McManus is walking away from his self-titled variety television show after three gold Logies and a decade on air.

McManus made the surprise announcement at the beginning of Sunday night's episode of Rove. "I know we've made jokes about this on the show before where I've just gone, 'Oh, I'm leaving', and it's was like, 'Oh, I'm going to come back after the break'. Not this time.

"So if you need to text somebody, if you need to get on the phone, if you need to email, if you need to tweet ... I don't even know if people phone anybody any more, if you want to send off a carrier pigeon and let people know, anyone who might otherwise be watching tonight and isn't, let them know. I would love for them to be on board to say goodbye.

"It is very short notice, I do realise that. But it's only a decision that I came up with very recently. "And to be honest I didn't want a whole lot of fuss going into tonight as I don't going out the other end as well.

"I also think tonight's the perfect night for it and we've got the best setting possible. "All our cast is here tonight to help wrap this baby up, you guys are at home. Will you help send me off tonight?" The crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

McManus and Network Ten released a statement confirming Sunday night's show, which was the final for the season, would be the last. "It was a difficult call to make but after 10 years it felt like time to step away from the show and take a break to properly reflect on what I want to do next as a performer," McManus said.

...it was a difficult call to make but after ten years it felt like time to step away from the show and take a break to properly reflect on what I want to do next as a performer," Rove said.

Rove's decision followed discussions with Channel Ten over the last couple of weeks. "The relationship with David Mott (chief programming officer) and the team at Ten has given us the space to make a show that we are extremely proud of over the last ten years. It is more opportunity than most will ever get," he said. "I thank them for their support and hope they have enjoyed the ride as much as I have."

The relationship between Roving Enterprises and Channel Ten will continue with The 7pm Project and Before The Game, both on Ten through 2010. Mott said: "The end of Rove on Ten does not mark the end of Rove and Ten: a relationship that spans a decade is harder than this to switch off".

At the close of last night's show McManus said it was not a decision he had taken lightly and that it "just seems like the right thing to do". "Let me say thank you to everybody who makes this show possible," he said, adding that the show members were like family to him. "And also to the families it was not my idea to do the weekends." In a statement he said he did not want last night's show to mark the end. "I've closed a chapter and after I recover from the wrap party I will work out what's next," he said.

• From eBroadcast.com.au - 'Rove returns to television'

FOXTEL today announced that Rove McManus will return to Australian television in 2011 – exclusively on FOXTEL – to host a new talk show on FOX8.

The one hour weekly program – ROVE LA – is to be filmed in Los Angeles and will be produced by Roving Enterprises. The exclusive series will premiere on FOX8 later this year.

Each week, ROVE LA will be a postcard home from the multi-Award winning comedian and filmed in front of an intimate audience in a Hollywood studio. Celebrity guests will feature, as well as field stories from Rove while he acquaints himself with the American way of life.

On his return to Australian TV, Rove said: "While it has been great to rest, recharge and get to know LA over the past 12 months, I have really missed the adrenaline rush of a TV studio and doing what I love most. I'm excited to be back, excited to be with FOXTEL and excited to be doing a show from a country that will give me plenty to share with everyone back home. Now if only I can get the exchange rate going in the right direction…"

FOXTEL Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh, said: "It is an under-statement to say we are excited that Rove is joining FOXTEL. His passion and enthusiasm for this project is enthralling, and after a well earned break it will be great to have him back on Australian television again." "Every Australian television network was chasing Rove and I am delighted that he chose FOXTEL. It is an absolute vote of confidence by one of our brightest and most successful television performers that he chose FOXTEL as the future and indeed, his future.

This series will be unique. It will see Rove return to some of his comic roots and will have all the energy and spontaneity of a studio show in front of a live audience. It also promises some of Hollywood's biggest names as guest stars. FOXTEL intends for this to be a longterm partnership. We are already planning more show ideas well into 2012. This is a landmark deal for FOXTEL," he said.

• The Herald Sun - 'Rove's chilling out in the LA sun'

Rove McManus is enjoying kicking back as he prepares for a new role on television, he tells Luke Dennehy.

ON the roof of the glamorous West Hollywood hotel The London in Los Angeles, a refreshed and relaxed Rove McManus looks as fit and healthy as he has ever been. It may be the middle of winter, but unseasonal weather in Los Angeles means a mini heatwave for this time of year, 26C and more like a Australian spring day.

Tanned and obviously hitting the gym, McManus turned 37 on Friday and you get the feeling he has settled into Los Angeles life. In a city full of aspiring actors, models and television presenters, the Gold Logie winner goes unnoticed, which he loves, and little do those aspiring stars who come to the entertainment capital of the world know that McManus has achieved more fame and professional success than they could ever hope for...

Foxtel director of television Brian Walsh is in Los Angeles this week meeting with McManus to talk about the new show - It is an understatement to say we are excited that Rove is joining Foxtel. His passion and enthusiasm for this project is enthralling, and after a well-earned break, it will be great to have him back on Australian television again.

McManus, along with wife Tasma Walton and friends, celebrated his 37th birthday and toasted the new show on Friday night at trendy LA Mexican restaurant Red O. The couple moved to Los Angeles after his show finished in 2009.

HE may have missed out on this years Gold Logie, but Rove McManus has been named the kids favourite Aussie at this year's Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

...perennial kids' favourite McManus showed off his burping contest winner's belt, saying he'd been practising and was determined to hold on to it.

"I take it really seriously, far too seriously for an adult,'' McManus laughed.

Excerpts from FairFax publication The Brisbane Times - 'Rove still 'the fav' of Aussie kids'

TV talk-show host Rove McManus was dumped in a pool of a slime as he took out the top prize at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards for the second year in a row.

The perennial kids' champion Rove descended from a slippery slide into a slime pool as he was announced the 'fave aussie', dragging in Australian Idol host Andrew Gunsberg with him. He beat the likes of Bindi Irwin, Hugh Jackman and Jessica Mauboy for the title. It was certainly McManus' night. He earlier beat Gunsberg in the famed burp off competition, and took out fave TV star. As he went up to accept his award McManus was mobbed by children grabbing him in the audience.

"I need to tell you something, someone touched my bum," McManus laughed on stage. "... And that's very inappropriate.

• Excerpts from WHO - 'Romancing Rove: Tasma Walton Dishes on Proposing to Rove'

When news broke on June 17 that actress Tasma Walton, 35, had married TV host Rove McManus, 35, in a private ceremony a day earlier on the famous beach at Broome, WA, it took the showbiz world by surprise. After all, there had been no official engagement announcement to get publicity warmed up.

In her first interview after the wedding, Walton tells WHO, "He'd gone to the States and I just missed him, and it was strange for me because I'd never viewed myself as the marrying type, really."

She did a painting for McManus that said "Marry me" and wrapped it as a gift. And? "He said yes."

As Walton explains to WHO, the low-key nuptials were exactly what they wanted. "We were very happy. It was a really great day." Walton is now enjoying a holiday with McManus. "We travel really well together, actually, we go away a bit for our FFI [Fauna & Flora International] work. We both love animals and are passionate about conservation, so it works."

And those trips are far from five-star excursions, reveals the down-to earth Walton. "It's camping in the Cambodian jungle. I found it a little bit disconcerting at night time," she confesses. "I was just praying I wouldn't need to go to the toilet. I held on all night."...

ROVE McManus and Tasma Walton have tied the knot in a secret ceremony on a beach in Broome, Western Australia.

Tasma said: "The day was everything we hoped for: simple, quiet and intimate, in a beautiful Broome landscape with a small group of family and close friends celebrating beside us.

Rove said: "Tasma and I are very happy and look forward to that continuing for a long time to come. It was wonderful to get to share that happiness with both our families and friends around us." Tasma wore a white, vintage 1970's sundress. Rove wore no shoes.

ROVE McManus has another trophy for the pool room after his conservation efforts were recognised with an Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior award.

At the annual VIP breakfast this morning, Rove took to the stage at the Sunshine Coast-based zoo at Beerwah alongside zoo director Terri Irwin and her children Bindi, 10, and Robert, 5, to accept the award which honours the legacy left by Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin who was killed in a stingray attack in 2006. Terri said that Rove, who was recently appointed vice president of the Fauna & Flora International (FFI) Australia along with conservation legend David Attenborough, had demonstrated a passion and commitment to the cause. "I really admire Rove and his passion for conservation," she said.

''He is one man who uses his personality and celebrity to raise awareness for worthy causes and he is bringing the issues of wildlife and wild places to mainstream Australia."

Terri planted a kiss on Rove's cheek and threw her arms around him after describing him as a "bit of a spunk".
